AJAX DOWNS, SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 – Stamping himself as a rising star, FIRST COLD WAVE rolled over the field in the $65,520 Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Ajax Downs on September 15. The attractive sorrel gelding, sent off as the heavy 3 to 5 favourite in the field of eight, broke like a bullet under jockey Brian Bell and strolled to a 1 1/2 length victory in the 330-yard dash for juveniles sired by Ontario stallions.

John Wilson and Scott Reid’s Night Leader, winner of the Ontario Bred Futurity in August, was a fast-closing second with Keepr of the Stars, owned by Belinda Taggart, another three-quarters of a length back in third.

First Cold Wave, owned and bred by Robert Bailey of Oakwood, ON and trained by Jason Pascoe, stopped the teletimer in 17.146 for an 88 speed index. It was the third win from five starts for the son of first-year sire Cold Hard Dash, who was brought to Ontario by a syndicate of local horsepeople including Bailey, Pascoe, Taggart, Milena Kwiecien, and Amelie Aubut.

“He just did it himself, it’s amazing to be on a horse like that,” said Bell. “He’s really focussed from the post parade and in the gate. Honestly, I don’t think we have seen the best of him.”
First Cold Wave, who was produced from the Wave Carver mare Cassies Carver, has earned $51,559.

Pascoe, who trains his horses on his Pontypool, ON farm with partner Bryanne Langford, won four races on the eight-race card, padding his lead in the trainer standings. Pascoe has 29 wins while Craig Spada is second with 14. Alberta jockey Ricardo Moreno won three races on the day, all for Pascoe.
*Racing continues at Ajax Downs on Sept. 22 with the exciting final of the $45,000 Picov Derby featuring a field of the 10 best 3-year-olds at Ajax Downs. First race post time is 12:55 p.m. To pre-register to attend the day of racing, go to www.ajaxdowns.com and sign up beginning Sept. 20.

PRESS RELEASE – QROOI’s Ontario Stallion Season Auction for 2021 a Success, Prospective Quarter Horse Breeders Enthusiastic

AJAX DOWNS, MARCH 3, 2021
By: Jennifer Morrison
The second year of the Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario’s Stallion Season Auction was another success as Quarter Horse owners, breeders and stallion owners, experienced and new, are excited to help grow the industry.

Total bids on Ontario stallion seasons for this year increased almost 20% from the 2020 auction.

Proceeds from the on-line auction, which still has several stallion seasons available for bidding, will include a 2024 Stallion Auction Futurity Stakes race at Ajax Downs.. All offspring by stallions that donated a breeding through this program will be eligible. Proceeds from the auction will be divided as follows: 30% to the stallion owner whose foals win the race, 30% to the owner who won the race if that owner purchased a breeding to the sire of the winner and 40% will go to fund the purse. Those purchasing a season will receive a free nomination and sustaining payments into this stakes race.
The 2020 Stallion Season Auction’s proceeds are earmarked for a 2023 Stallion Auction Futurity Stakes race.

“It’s a great opportunity for someone just getting into breeding to reach some great stallions at a discounted price,” said young horsewoman Brooke Sisson. “It’s always nice to have a chance to save some money and to top it off, you get the opportunity to race your foal in a stakes race.”
Sisson purchased two seasons; one to Fire Finder for $600 for her own mare and the other, for Look at Magics Form, for “a friend of mine and her mare.”
A season to one of the newest stallions in Ontario, Peighnt Your Fate, a son of successful North American stallion PYC Paint Your Wagon, topped the auction at $1,300. Sean Slater purchased the season to the talented horse from owner Richard Wincikaby.

Patricia Ball bought a season Spy for the Senate, one of the top older horses at Ajax Downs in recent years, for $1,000 from owner Milena Kwiecien.  “I bought the season to him for my mare This Cartels Girl and last year bought one to Maryland Magic for my other mare Rose Rage. I am ready to get back into breeding again.”

Carneros Sets World Record Canadian sprinter sets 110 yard world record

The American Quarter Horse Association has confirmed that Milena Kwiecien’s Carneros, a 2015 brown gelding, has set a new 110-yard world record of :6.770.

Carneros set the record on June 16, 2019, while racing at Ajax Downs in an allowance race.

The horse was bred by Stone Chase Stables LLC and is by champion Prospect To The Top. He is  the first foal out of the stakes-placed Valiant Hero mare Cakebread And Thou.

He was trained in this start by Jason Pascoe and ridden by Ed Walton.

The previous 110-yard record holder was Jakes Charming Jody, who in 2012 ran the distance at Remington Park in :6.784.
