AJAX DOWNS, JULY 12, 2021 –  Ten of the top 3-year-old Quarter Horse fillies in the country will be on display at Ajax Downs on July 14, gunning for the winner’s share in the exciting $51,660 Princess Derby.  The 350-yard sprint field is made up of the fastest qualifiers from two Time Trials held on June 30 and is race nine on a huge 10-race card at the Ajax, ON, track.
With the gradual re-opening of the province during the Covid-19 pandemic, fans are now permitted at Ajax Downs through a registration process that can be found at
Fastest Princess Derby qualifier ICE CREAM CARTEL, a powerful grey daughter of Five Bar Cartel, put up an 89 speed index for her 1 1/2 length victory in her Trial, her second start of the season. Owned by Marie Broadstock and the Picov Cattle Company and trained by Bob Broadstock, Ice Cream Cartel is a two-time winner in six career races. She will break from post position eight with jockey Ismael Mosquiera.
STREAKINLILWAGON, the beaten favourite in Ice Cream Cartel’s Trial, had an awkward start from the gate and closed ground fast to finish third, a nose behind runner-up Goodness Graceious, an Ontario-bred owned by the Big Dog Racing Stable. Streakinlilwagon, owned and bred by Pontypool’s Jason Pascoe won the biggest race for 2-year-olds in 2020, the Alex Picov Memorial Futurity.
JESSAPRIMADONNA won the first Princess Derby Trial despite stumbling at the start under jockey Cory Spataro. Owned by Craig Spada of Ridgeway, ON and Albertan Isaac Fehr and trained by Spada, Jessaprimadonna was up to win her Trial by 1 1/4 lengths with a speed index of 79.
The Princess Derby has a post time of 5:06 p.m. and the first race of the day goes at 1:30 p.m. Be sure to follow Ajax Downs on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook (@AjaxDowns) and reserve a spot at the track at the track’s website,
