AJAX DOWNS, SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 – Two-year-old Quarter Horses take the stage at Ajax Downs on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 in the final for the $60,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity at 330 yards.
As a reminder, Ajax Downs’ Quarter Horse racing has an earlier, first race post time of 12:55 p.m. for the remainder of the 2021 racing season.
A competitive field of 10 juveniles, the fastest qualifiers from two Trials for the OSS Futurity held on Aug. 25, will head to the post for race seven on a strong eight-race card on Wednesday.
FIRST COLD WAVE, the fastest qualifier for the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity, for 2-year-olds by Ontario stallions, has drawn post position four for owner and breeder Robert Bailey of Oakwood, ON. The tall, sorrel gelding powered to a one-length win in his Trial under jockey Brian Bell in a time of 17.01 for a 92 speed index. Trained by Jason Pascoe, First Cold Wave turned the tables on rival NIGHT LEADER, who finished second but had won the Ontario Bred Futurity over First Cold Wave on Aug. 4.

First Cold Wave is from the first crop of runners for his sire Cold Hard Dash, owned by a partnership that includes Belinda Taggart, who will start Kold Kinda Star, another son of Cold Hard Dash, in the Futurity final.

Night Leader, owned by John Wilson and Scott Reid, was 8 to 1 when he won the Ontario Bred Futurity and was closing ground when favoured in his second-place finish to First Cold Wave in their Trial. Trainer Reid’s partner Carly Furlonger, who recently returned to riding following the birth of the couple’s son Weston, will ride Night Leader for the first time Wednesday from post nine.

KEEPR OF THE STARS, who starts from post position one, closed fast to win his Trial in a time of 17.13 for an 88 speed index. Owned and bred by Taggart and trained by Pascoe, the son of Star Fire Dash held off Rick Crispi’s filly Magic Flare to win by half a length for his second win in four races. Helen Vanek rides.

Magic Flare, trained by Tom Dunlap, is one of four 2-year-olds in the field by first-year sire Maryland Magic and that stallion is still racing, having won the Sprint Series-3 last week at Ajax Downs. Magic Flare starts from post seven with Ramiro Castillo riding.
Fans can pre-register to attend the races at www.ajaxdowns.com beginning Monday, Sept. 13. Follow us on social media @AjaxDowns.
